Dr. Dolittle

ロバート・ダウニー・Jr.&豪華ボイスキャスト大集合!「ドクター ...Yesterday, I watched Dr. Dolittle with Japanese dubbing. The story is comical and funny, and most main characters are animals, not humans so suits dubbing very much. What is more, the voice actor who dubbed the hero of this movie has recently passed away... For Keiji Fujiwara, this movie became his posthumous. So, I concentrated on all his voices during the movie. They were marvelous.

This story is in Cuba around Cuban Crisis. The hero acted by Jo is a young man who came to Cuba to lean medical science for his country Bolivia.  There, he met Guevara, and set his mind to join the army of Guevara to save Bolivia...

This movie begins from the scene in Hiroshima. I'm from Hiroshima, so I felt nostalgia in it.
The hero in this movie is very sincere and did his best to protect his country. I respect him.

DR JEKYLL and MR HYDE

This time I read "DR JEKYLL and MR HYDE", written by R.L. Stevenson. This title is also famous in Japan but I've never read, so I chose to read.

Mr. Utterson is a lawyer who was a man of cold and few words. Yet somehow he is lovable and there was something kind in his eyes. One of his few friends is Mr. Richard Enfield who is Utterson's distant cousin and a young man enjoying the pleasure of life. Somehow they like each other.
One day, on their walk in a small street in London, Looking at a tall, dark and sinister building with no windows, Enfield reminds a very strange story...

In this book, the more story develops, the deeper mystery, fear and the ominous get. Dr. Jekyll who is in the heart of this mystery has a desire, which I sympathized with a little.

This book's story processing is very prominent, so I recommend it!!

Cinema Stunts

Today I read 'CINEMA STUNTS'. This book shows how stunts in film begin. The first film-makers before 1900 often made films of circus acts. In this way they were able to show their circus to many more people than ever before. In films, stunt-men perform various extreme acts such as shooting on trees on a train, holding on to the hand of a big click, and so on. Many people went to the cinema to see them. But it's inevitable that the more stunt films people produce the many people get serious accidents.

'He was in hospital for a long time. In the end he lost his leg.'
Because of an accident after filming the scene on fighting on the train on above, however survived, a stunt-man had to cut his leg.

'Many early film stars were women'
In my image, real stunt demands harsh and tough actions, therefore I was thinking it's usual that male stunt-men could easily be a star. But the real was the opposite.

'The water killed three people in front of the cameras.'
I'm astonished that even water can kill people.

In the beginning, most stunts seem to have been done by only humans. Of course, they caused many accidents in actors and actresses. Not only humans, gradually animals began to be used for stunts, however, the way of using animals for filming, especially horses, were seriously cruel. They killed thousands of horses which had damaged their legs because of humans. That can't be allowed today.
Through such history, they came up with many ways to make a showy and attractive action movie in safer way. For example, glass made by sugar reduced stunt-men's injury.
This book is very interesting and good to know the history of stunt!!

Tina Turner

Last week I read "Tina Turner". Tina Turner is the name of a black singer. She and his husband's band "The Ike and Tina Turner Revue" was one of America's top bands in the '60s and early 70s. However,  She was a survivor.

""I wanted to say, 'Ma, forget it, this is not a marriage'. But it was too late for that. I was Mrs.Ike Turner.""
Tina's husband married her not to let her leave and control her. Knowing that she wanted to tell the truth but she couldn't.

"It had felt wonderful, but it ever going to happen again?"
She and Phil Spector produced River Deep Mountain High. Although that only reached number 88 in the U.S. pop charts, that reached number 3 in the British pop charts. Actually, this was made without her husband.

"Sixteen years of anger were suddenly set free"
After sixteen years of endurance, her rage to her husband exploded. She exposed every anger and attacked him.

Tina has loved music since her childhood. She survived a much painful time such as parents' fight and harsh restriction from her husband and now she enjoys her own life. She is great person!

Self-introduction

My name is Ken Ishibashi. I’m from Hiroshima. I had belonged to brass band club in junior high school and rowing boat club in high school and now, I belong to yosakoi dancing club. I like it very much.
These days, I started 30day ZUMBA challenge. Zumba is a kind of dancing exercise. With a focus on Latin music, we enjoy casual dance rather than fitness. That is very good for health and mental! On this year I’m planning to visit my friend in Saitama who has known each other since junior high school. I’m looking so forward to seeing her, but it may be put off because of COVID-19. I worry about the friend so much.
I also want to go to Mt.Aso by moped! It will take over one hour but scenes on road to Mt.Aso must be grate! For it, I have to get helmet-wearable camera!

book report

Extensive Reading final report
1912002 Ishibashi Ken
Vanity Fair

The writer is William Makepeace Thackeray(1811~1863).  He is one of the representative novelists in the Victorian era. This story is set in 19th century London. Using sarcastic and humorous words, he criticized people who live in the rich and aim at the upper class.

In this novel, many characters appear, so it's hard to memorize all the member's names. However, the story goes while bringing Becky Sharp (Rebecca) into focus. She was born in the poor and tries to advance to the upper class with her inborn beauty and talent. In spite of her character that is liar and greedy, most people are easily deceived due to her excellent act.

In chapter 1, the differences between the two young ladies are depicted. The story begins in an academy for young ladies. Amelia 'Emmy' Sedley is of a rich family, who is honest and earnest. Besides she is good at many things so loved by everyone in the academy. By contrast, Rebecca 'Becky' Sharp has a rebel spirit and ambition to climb the social ladder. Her parents had already died and she is hired there as a teacher of French by the headmistress. However, she is not satisfied with the current situation. After graduating from the school together, Becky stays at Amelia's home for two weeks. There, she meets Amelia's brother Joseph and she makes eyes at him to get married to him. Though he falls in love with, he is too shy to tell his love. In addition, he made a big blunder over drinking much and then had left home. So she got fed up with Joseph and quickly left Sedley's house to another house.

Next, she went to Queen's Crawley to work as a governess. Though she was warmly adapted, she felt dull of the life there. One day, the baronet of the house Sir Pitt's Crawley's sister Miss Matilda Crawley came to him. Then, watching how noblemen and noblewomen behaved, she understood that money and a person's place in society are more important than honesty and kindness. She knows Amelia has many charms and is certain that they will bring her a rich husband. Becky swore that she finds a husband and a house of her own by her wits, and have a higher place in society than Amelia. Becky was liked by Miss Matilda Crawley and became her favorite companion. What is more, she meets Captain Rawdon Crawley who is the favorite nephew of Matilda and will inherit half of her money. So, she flirted with him and ran away, believing that Miss Matilda would forgive them. However, she doesn't forgive them and discides not to inherit her money.
When it comes to Amelia, due to the situation of war between the United Kingdom and French, Amelia's father had gone bankrupt and her fiancee's father didn't help Sedley's family although Mr. Sedley had once helped George's family when they were poor, so he refuged the marriage of Amelia and George. Despite, both of them got married without Mr.Sedley's permission and have gone to their honeymoon.

As I wrote above, reading whole this book, I found that there is no one whose heart is truly pure and kind except Amelia Sedley. All the people have any ambitious and ill will but Amelia doesn't have them, so she can't recognize and is hurt often. In contrast to Amelia, Rebecca Sharp has them and understands well. She taps into her own charm and talent to get a higher place in society and happier life than Amelia. Although there are many extreme expressions of people's ugly characters, this book is very interesting. (602 words)

George Eliot's English Travels

This time I read "George Eliot's English Travels". Written by Kathleen McCormack(1943~), Professor of English at Florida International University in North Miami.

This book is fun but too long for me to finish reading.

"When Marian Evans and George Henry Lewes returned from their German elopement in the spring of 1855, they could scarcely have faced a more daunting combination of scandal, slander, and ostracism."
I'm a bit surprised because I think elopement in past age doesn't be accepted usually.

"George Eliot's scattered two- and three-day excursions away from London"
     I like this expression "scattered"

"They spent, indeed, about a quarter of the twenty years remaining to them traveling abroad"
It's so amazing that they spent about 3 years for traveling!

In spite of her character that is liar and greedy, most people are easily deceived due to her excellent act.

"His bulk caused Joseph much anxious thought and alarm"
Joseph is a plump man and worries about it very much. However, he can't put it down.

""The children must have someone with them," cried Mrs. Sedly.
"Let Joe go," said his father laughing,”
It's a scene that one person suggests to go to a park. Joseph's father makes fun of him and as I wrote, Joseph cares it terribly.
"Like many wealthy people, it was Miss Crawley's habit to accept as much service as she could get from her inferious"
Miss Crawley is a very rich old woman, and she is too ungrateful to leave others when she founds them useful.
